MEDIA RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION - 23rd SEPTEMBER 2002

TOP UK PHONE MAST ACTIVISTS MEET IN MANCHESTER

Activists from Mast Sanity met today in Manchester for what was the largest ever gathering of campaign activists from around the UK. Plans were put in place to ensure a more proactive and coordinated approach to future campaigns. The campaign believes that it is moving into an exciting new era that has seen in the recent past an unprecedented number of local authorities taking a positive stance towards protecting their local residents from the effects of harmful irradiation emmited from phone masts by refusing more applications for base stations than ever before.

The meeting was addressed by newly appointed Mast Sanity Director Lisa Oldham who informed the meeting that over 400 local campaigns had now gained help fom Mast Sanity since it was formed in January 2002 and that a similar number had approached what was the campaigns parent body the Campaign for Planning Sanity. The campaign unanimously thanked CfPS for the help and support that it had received, but agreed that it was time to move forward as an independent body in its own right.

Mast Sanity Director Lisa Oldham said: "I am proud to have received the total support from fellow activists through a unanimouse vote appointing me to the post of the first Director of Mast Sanity. I welcome the task that now lies before us. Since our formation 8 months ago we have helped 100s of local communities to defeat inappropriately sited masts that if erected would have seen the health of thousands of children and adults deteriate as a direct result of the emissions from base stations, our newly structured campaign should enable even greater numbers to gain the help and support they deserve".

Chair Chris Maile continued: "Many local communities are devastated by phone masts within their communities at last we are now in a very strong position to increase the level of advise to local communities. There is genuine concern at local community level, not only on the health aspects, but at the level of support that is received from the local planning authorities, due in the main to the unclear wording of Government Guidance, which appears to be in total conflict with the law as interpreted by the courts. It is therefore time for a change, and if this Government is not prepared to listen to the 100s of thousands concerned about these inappropriately sited masts, then Mast Sanity will be working towards advising its members and supporters where to put their 'X' at all levels of election".

END.

Editors Note: All initial media contact should be via Lisa Oldham on 0161427 7977 - A more structured approach to media activity will now be on offer, including access to a number of topic related speakers.
